Adopting a Pet in Austin
If you don’t already have a pet, or the one you have could use a friend, the thought might have crossed your mind that adopting a dog or cat would be a really good idea for you and your family. There are so many wonderful, sweet animals out there just waiting for someone to love and care for them.
Whether or not you have in mind the type of pet you want to consider (check out our “Tips For Adopting a Pet” article), the shelters have many breeds and varieties of dogs and cats that are sure to match up with your family’s personalities. Once you choose to adopt, then these are some of the places in the Austin area where you can adopt a canine or feline friend.
Options For Adopting A Pet In Austin
Of course, Austin has the Austin Humane Society. Listed in the dog category, you can view all of the available dogs ready to go to their new home. They are listed with a picture by their name, breed, and age. Under the cat category, the same information is given. There are some real cuties pictured for both types of pets!
The hours for the shelter are Monday to Saturday noon to 7:00 pm, and Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m. They are located at 124 W. Anderson Lane. All animals have been given their vaccinations. They have been spayed or neutered, microchipped, checked for heartworms, and have had a wellness exam. You will also receive some starter food and local pet store coupons. This is a $430 value, but of course, you pay much less than this at the shelter for these services. Each animal’s fee is unique to that pet, and prices vary according to size, age, and breed. When you click on your choices online, the fee will be given for that particular animal. Also, please don’t forget, older pets are often a fantastic option for you. And, adoption fees are waived for all animals over the age of 5.
To adopt from the Humane Society, the process is pretty simple. Just go to the Humane Society or go online. When your new family member is decided upon, fill out the application, and get to know the pet. You can play with him or walk him. The adoption counselor will talk to you about their personality, etc. If you already own a pet, the shelter requires a dog introduction onsite. Once the paperwork is filled out, you can take him home with you that very day! (Be sure to have everything set up for him (food, toys, etc).
Another location available for pet adoption is Austin Pets Alive. They are located at 1156 West Cesar Chavez. Hours are daily 11:30 am until 7:00 pm. They also have shelters at Tarrytown Dog Adoption Center, 3118 Windsor Road, and Tarrytown Cat Adoption Center, 3108 Windsor Road, with hours at both locations noon until 7:00 pm daily.
To adopt a dog, you can also browse online at their “How to Adopt a Dog” site or “How to Adopt a Cat” site or go into the shelter. As in the case of the Humane Society, fees vary as to breed, age, and size. The services that are provided with the pet are very similar to those of the Humane Society.
