Top Dog Breeds for Families with Kids

“I want a puppy!”  We’ve all heard our kids yell that at one time or another.  And, if you’re dog lovers like us, you’ve actually been the one yelling it yourself.  Dogs are fun, lovable, loyal, and make great playmates.  But, some breeds are just naturally better with kiddos than others.  I’ve heard it said that large breeds are better with small children because they can tolerate the young kids as they learn how to care for the dog.  For example, a Labrador is less likely to get injured if a child plays too rough with him than a small Dachshund would.

What Type Of Dog Should I Get?

So, what should you look for when deciding what type of breed of dog to make as your newest family member?  Well, that actually depends a lot on your family.  PetMD lists 4 main factors to consider when choosing the type of dog that is best suited for your family:  age, size, temperament, and energy level.

As you consider those factors, here is the list of top 10 picks according to PetMD.  Please click here to view a short video on why each breed was selected for active families.

  1. Mixed Breed (“The Mutt”)
  2. Golden Retriever
  3. Labrador Retriever
  4. Poodle
  5. Irish Setter
  6. Vizsla
  7. Newfoundland
  8. Bull Terrier
  9. Beagle
  10. Bull Dog

That is a great list of some amazing breeds!  All breeds of dogs offer their own wonderful personality traits and PetMD definitely chose some fantastic breeds.

Don’t Forget A Wonderful Breed…Pit Bulls!

We would like to add a wonderful, lovable (and often overlooked) breed to the list…pit bulls.  They make fantastic pets!  They have received a bad reputation but that is really through no fault of their own.  Did you know that they actually have a better temperament rating than many other breeds?  It’s true!  Click here for a list of temperament ratings and as you are looking at some of your favorite breeds, check out how well the pit bull performs.  So, please don’t forget this breed.  Many pit bulls are unnecessarily being destroyed (as many as 3000 a day in this country) because they can’t find homes.  I have a rescue pit bull and he is the best dog!  For more information, please read our blog on how this breed could be a fantastic addition to your family.

Go Get Some Love!

So, have you and your family picked out a breed yet?  There’s a pet out there just waiting to give you love.  If you’re like us, you want to adopt them all!

  • Do your research
  • Talk to your veterinarian
  • Ask your friends and family about their experiences
  • Visit your local shelter and set up some time to interact with the dog you have chosen before adopting him or her.

Whatever breed you choose to adopt into your family, please be sure and take the time to train your children as much as you train your newest family member.  The kiddos have to be taught how to take care of their new bundle of fur just as much as the pet has to get used to his or her surroundings.

Do you have a furry family member whose breed didn’t make the list?  Please tell us about him or her.  We would love to hear about your small or large breed dog that is wonderful with your kids and a vital member of your family!

Woof!
